Position Purpose:   

The successful candidate will support projects related to public safety, defense and national security. The  Software Engineer will work collaboratively with teams of software, application, database developers, and a significant amount of collaboration with bioinformaticians, biologists, and other domain experts to oversee the documentation, design, build, and test cycles involved in developing sustainable next generation sequencing data analysis workflows.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development and optimization of bioinformatics workflows to enable scalable and reproducible data analyses
  • Leverage and improve leading open source tools to analyze next generation sequencing data
  • Conduct software benchmarking, identifying inconsistencies and resolving issues
  • Research and recommend new innovative bioinformatics tools for integration into pipelines
  • Mentor others working on matrixed project teams who are learning software engineering concepts
  • Contribute to strengthening the corporate culture of best software engineering practices
  • Document, summarize, and present findings to customers, subject matter experts, and other data scientists

 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to identify the most impactful new algorithms and champion their adoption
  • Experience with large-scale data processing and data preparation
  • Expertise working in a Unix/Linux environment and with Linux command line
  • Experience programming in Python
  • Knowledge about containers, such as Docker or Singularity
  • Experience with bioinformatics workflow managers, such as Snakemake or Nextflow
  • Skilled in using Git for version control and collaborative software development (please provide your github page or example code of previous work as appropriate)
  • Proficiency using open-source software, tools, and databases for analyzing next-generation sequencing data (e.g., whole-genome sequencing, RNA-seq, metagenomics)
  • Familiarity developing and maintaining relational databases desirable
  • Proficiency in Perl and R desirable
  • Ability to work independently, as well as willingness to work on teams, to solve problems and achieve technical goals
  • Motivated to contribute in a team environment and collaborate across scientific and technical disciplines
  • Able to balance multiple on-going tasks while operating efficiently and with minimal supervision
  • Adept at communication and collaborations with data scientists, statisticians, and biologists
  • Willingness to contribute to scientific proposals and publications

 

Education/Experience:

  • B.S./M.S. in computer science or bioinformatics
  • 4+ years of experience designing and delivering applications for automated data processing

 

Certificates and Licenses:

 None required

 

Clearance:

Candidate must be able to obtain a Secret level security clearance.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

N/A

 

Working Conditions/ Equipment:

  • Ability to work in varying conditions to include: traditional office environments with sedentary extended periods required for voluminous data analysis via office automation;
