Systems Architect & Software Engineer

Location: Charlottesville, VA

Signature Science Charlottesville Operations has an opening for a TS/SCI-cleared Systems Architect & Lead Software Engineer. This person will lead the design, development, and implementation of a myriad of databases, analytical tools, and state-of-the-art hardware for a classified government client. The successful candidate is a strong communicator, innovative software developer/engineer, proven leader on other database design and software tool development projects, and enjoys leading and working side by side on diverse teams of other engineers and scientists.

 The position is located at Signature Science's Discovery Laboratory in Charlottesville, VA and requires frequent access to a government client facility. An active TS/SCI and full CI-poly are required. Anticipated travel is infrequent and will include the National Capital Region, Austin, TX, sites in Florida, and the U.K.

 PMP, Agile, and software engineering certifications are highly desired.


The following are the primary position responsibilities:

  • Directs and manages execution of software systems engineering requirements definition and software architecture.
  • Performs technical trade studies associated with design, development, and integration of hardware, software, and analytics.
  • Creates software system application, analytics, and system test cases and test plans.
  • Develops software architectural products in multiple coding languages and deliverables for the government clients.


Experience and Skills Required:

  • Experience with producing System Architecture diagrams and supporting documentation.
  • Experience leading system test plan creation and execution efforts.
  • Proven working experience in installing, configuring and troubleshooting in SIPR, NIPR, and JWICS environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and nontechnical users.
  • Actively lead and participate in teams working on projects by making recommendations on how to improve product quality as well as group productivity.
  • Lead requirements collection and documentation activities prior to and during execution.
  • Lead project initiatives through implementation of advanced web technology solutions.
  • Manage disciplined configuration management and SDLC infrastructure to develop software solutions.
  • Support engineering efforts that provide engineering, technical, and managerial direction for problem definition, analysis, requirement development, and implementation for complex systems in the engineering discipline required to meet technical requirements.
  • Work directly with clients and senior level management to develop resolve requirements, technical direction system development, improvements, optimization, or project support efforts.
  • Write and/or oversee that writing of technical design specifications.
  • Assist in the modification of company products, customer, and/or internal systems to meet the needs of the client and/or end-user.
  • Implement and contribute to new software design or enhancements to existing software.
  • Assess impact of changes to applications and systems and makes recommendations.
  • Develop integration plans.
  • Implement and adhere to coding standards and naming conventions.
  • Develop and execute Agile software development Standard Operating Procedures and improve software and process documentation.
  • Manage project scheduling.
  • Develop well-designed and documented software within schedule.
  • Keep current with latest software development tools and techniques.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to junior staff. 
  • Take part in decisions affecting long range organizational goals and strategic planning. 
  • Improve and maintain the existing software performance.
  • Oversee tier-3 support to end users


Other requirements:

  • Sole US citizenship
  • Current possession of and ability to maintain DoD TS/SCI clearance
  • Bachelor's in Software Engineering, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Forensics, or other hard science/mathematics degree
  • 15 years' applicable experience in government, classified environment 
  • PMP and or Agile Certifications are highly desired.
